REVIEW of Discovering April by Sheena Hutchinson -- Blog Tour

Reading the blurb of Discovering April, I instantly knew that I had to get my hand on this. April reminded me so much of my former self that I just couldn't let the opportunity of immersing myself in her journey to self-discovery pass. Before I go to my review just a quick clarification, the synopsis states that the story is filled with sex, among other things, but they're not really graphic or vulgar so for readers who are turned off with sexed-up books, don't worry because this is a 4 at best in the intimacy meter.

CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
April Landau doesn't know who she is. She's forgetten her likes, dislikes, passion, fears, and dreams. Her life has revolved around a guy who has a habit of hurting her then "making up". She's lost and she wants to find herself again...hopefully with the help of her former best friend who became a stranger.

Jared Hoffman may have lost a lot at such a young age, but one thing he can say is that he knows who he is. It saddens him to see the girl of his dreams become a complete shell right before his very eyes. He wants to help her discover herself, and hopefully have her fall in love with him in the process.

TO LOVE:
Like I said earlier, I related instantly to the main character in more ways than one. Not to make this about me, but here's why I connected with April; we both had family who are very far away from us, leaving us practically on our own. We looked for attention and love in a guy, and made him the center of our universe. We both lost sight of everything else because we focused on our relationship. We broke up and made up more times than we can count, but no matter how toxic the relationship is, we still cam back to it anyway. And last but not the least, even though we know we deserve better, we just couldn't function alone anymore because we've been so used to having someone. It's funny because, while I was reading the book I got annoyed with how April acts and responds to his douche ex. But then I realized that that was exactly how I acted and responded during those times as well! So I was basically seeing myself and being pissed at how stupid I was! I felt like I was helping me discover who I am, you know what I mean?

As the story progressed, I found out that April is a really cool person. She's strong, doesn't give up, fights like hell, and loves with all her heart. Jared is also really nice. I've always found guys who've been pining over someone since they were really young utterly charming. The group of friends Jared introduced April to was totally awesome as well. I could've done without one member of the pack, but hey! You got to take the good along with the bad. The things they did to help April find out who she truly is were truly fun and inspiring. I can practically feel the energy come off of the book! It was that good.

TO BLEH:
Jared has this friend named Eric, and he Pissed. Me. Off. So. Bad! I mean, I get that you're trying to protect your friend from getting hurt, and you should get an award for Best Friend of the Year, but the things he said and did to April were just rotten! What kind of guy acts like that towards a girl? Dude, come on! Good thing you came around during the critical part though or I would've thrown my e-reader across the room.

SUMMARY:
I loved Discovering April, no matter how many times I wanted to put it down because it hit pretty close to home, and give it 5 stars. It's a heart-felt story, with a heroine that a lot of girls and women can relate to. It inspires us to figure out who we are as a whole and not as someone's half. I highly recommend it to others, and I assure you, disappointed you will not be.
